Napkin rings were an invention of the European bourgeoisie, first appearing on tables in France around 1800 and soon spreading to all countries in the western world. Most 19th century napkin rings were made of silver or silver plate, but others were made in bone, wood, porcelain, glass, and other materials. Occasionally called a "christening bangle", napkin rings were given as christening presents with the ring engraved with the initials of the newborn. 

Used originally to identify the napkins of a household between weekly wash days, rings were often engraved with numbers, initials or monograms to identify whose napkin was whose. As with most tablewares, the Victorian era saw napkin rings become beautifully detailed with openwork designs and lush engravings - truly jewelry for the table!
